Fall Fashion Colors for 2015
Autumn will quickly be upon us. Sweaters and leggings. Pumpkin spice lattes. Boots. The crispness in the air.
As I write this, I get a sense of deja vu…that I have been here before. Ah yes, I have. Last year. And the year before. As I have said before (every season when I write about upcoming season trends, and what I see from the fashion shows), trends and styles change much slower than most people expect. There is a ramping up period, and a time that it’s really hot, and then it tapers off. A slight bunny trail, but skinny jeans are an excellent example. I bought my first pair of skinny jeans 4 years ago. They had been popular before then, but for one reason or another, I hadn’t hopped on the band wagon (Prior to opening a boutique, I was SLOOOOW to join any trends for the same reason most women I encounter are. I was scared of wasting my money on something that was going to be a fad. I also didn’t want to look ridiculous when I looked back at pictures. But where is the fun in that?!!) But skinny jeans had been in style for 3-4 years before that (if my memory serves me). Now, in 2015, skinny jeans are losing popularity, and boot cut (and flare) jeans are swinging back. IMHO, 8-9 years of a trend is a pretty good run! I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of my skinny jeans.
If you have been following me for any period of time, you’ll remember that last year, I said close to the same words. If you are the type of person, like I was, who waits and waits and waits to hop on a bandwagon, here is your permission to hop on the stylewagon. We want you to join us, and not be left in the dust!!!
As I walked around a recent trade show, I noticed a few things. 1. This is a repeat of last year (yay!!!!) 2. The colors are more muted and subdued – lots and lots of browns.
Last year mustard was a hot color, and this year olive and coral have taken the lead. I’ve been talking about olive for several years. It has been the unofficial color of the year for 2 years. Coral is close behind. I had a customer comment that it must be popular – yep it is! Coral is a great color for almost every skin tone. Olive, on the other hand is not, but that will be another post for another date. Incidently, purple is supposed to be in the lineup for colors of the year, and I have had a HARD TIME findin
Last year, lace, plaid, houndstooth (a true classic), animal prints (which may wane in popularity, but not fully go away), were all popular prints. Pull them out for this year! You’ll be a trendsetter!! What is new/not-so-new: fur. Last year, fur was not so popular, but it was the year before. A MUST HAVE for this year is a fur vest. Just wait, I have some coming.
Last year, we saw a surge in metallic leather (it too had been ramping up for several seasons). This year, we’ll see metallic fabric (but not the cheap, high sheen kind from the 90s). The metallic fabric this season, are small threads woven into the material, making it tasteful and luxe. Instead of trashy. I am a huge fan of metallic fabric! It’s a simple and elegant way to add a bit of sparkle, without going over the top. To make it less Christmas-y, be sure to pair it with something non metallic. For example: a metallic thread skirt is a must for the holidays, but to wear it to the office, pair it with a non-metallic sweater or top (IE: a simple top. Not too dressy).
This year, leather and suede are toasty hot. GET THEM! Black is not going to be the color to buy them in. A buttery brown is the way to go (look at the graphic for my pick). Add fringe, and you’re golden!
“Marsala” is the official color of the year, but we won’t really see it until the holidays, just in time for cranberries and wine. Well, wine is never out of season. (WHY Marsala was picked as the color for the WHOLE year, I’ll never know. It’s really a fall/winter color. Dear Pantone, would you put me in charge of selecting the color of the year? I’ve called it every year for the past 5 years. Thanks!)
Navy or cobalt blue are always in style (hello?! jeans!!!). This is really too easy of a color (even though I’m drawn to it!). Cement gray is also hot hot hot, and a great color choice for every skin tone!!! Think of this as the 3rd unofficial color of the year (which looks amazing with the other two unofficial colors of the year).
